It is described as a rare survivor of the iron and brick age of manufacturing in Oakland, with a highly intact exterior despite interior remodelling and fires.","narrative":"Along Second Street in Oakland, between Jefferson and Clay Streets, stands a group of seven interlocked industrial sections that grew from two separate firms. Ives Scoville founded the Oakland Iron Works in 1871 and moved it to Second and Jefferson in 1882, where about 60 workers made steam engines, mining machinery and iron castings. The company was renamed United Iron Works in 1904 and operated under that name until 1955. Next door, the Remillard Brick Company, incorporated in 1879, kept stables, an office and a hay barn on its yard. United Iron Works acquired those buildings between 1918 and 1921 and merged them into its expanded shop. The complex includes wood-frame sheds clad in drop siding and corrugated metal, and a three-story brick office and pattern-storage building with a corbelled cornice and a cog-wheel emblem. Fires in 1889 and 1894 damaged the works, yet the exterior remains largely intact. It was listed as a rare survivor of 19th century iron and brick manufacturing.","period_of_significance":"c1882-c1925","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and vacant; exterior described as having remarkably high integrity, with the interior extensively remodelled and periodically damaged by fire.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.935672-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/83001171.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001171/a0c712182b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001171/a0c712182b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oakland_Ironworks_(Oakland,_CA).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oakland_Ironworks_(Oakland,_CA).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858297","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133254706"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/alameda-county/oakland-iron-works-united-works-and-the-remillard-brick-company-83001171/"}
