Philemon Wright later founded a settlement in Canada that became part of the National Capital Region. Architecturally, it is the only surviving complex of farm buildings in Winchester and one of few intact early 19th-century farms in the Boston area.","narrative":"Set at the northwest edge of Winchester, this twenty-acre farm combines cultivated fields, woodland, an 1828 farmhouse, six outbuildings and a house from 1967. Asa Locke built the farmhouse in a conservative Federal style, and it received Colonial Revival changes around 1910, including pedimented dormers and porticos. The 1827 barn, an ice house, a ca. 1915 produce storage barn with shelving for blue hubbard squash, and a gravity-fed irrigation system complete the working complex. The land was first held by the Wright family, early Woburn settlers. Philemon Wright sold it in 1800 and led a party to Canada, where he founded a settlement in the region around Ottawa. The Locke family then farmed it for four generations, expanding it into market gardens that supplied Boston. It is the sole surviving farm building complex in Winchester and the last market garden in the area still in agricultural use.","period_of_significance":"1827-1915","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal Period farmhouse with ca. 1910 Colonial Revival modifications","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied and in agricultural use; nine acres were in cultivation at the time of nomination, producing fodder and vegetables.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.652292-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7955/63795542/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000838.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000838/590af0f144-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000838/590af0f144-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_PhilemonWrightAsaLockeFarm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WinchesterMA_PhilemonWrightAsaLockeFarm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795542","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philemon_Wright/Asa_Locke_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7183027"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/wright-philemon-asa-locke-farm-83000838/"}
