It is a wood-frame house with a gambrel roof.","why_significant":"The nomination cites Criterion A for associations with the Revolutionary period in Cambridge, Criterion B for its link to Deacon Aaron Hill, and Criterion C as an example of mid-18th century residential architecture. It is one of seven surviving houses of the period occupied by patriots, nearly all moved, which illustrate the contrast with the Tory mansions on Brattle Street.","narrative":"Built around 1754 for Aaron Hill, this wood-frame house now stands at 17 Brown Street in Cambridge. It began as a two-story gambrel-roofed house on the site of today's 99 Brattle Street. Around 1867-68, when the Episcopal Theological School began developing that site, the house was moved to a nearby side street and raised one story, with a new first floor placed beneath it. Hill was a Cambridge mason, selectman, assessor, state legislator and Deacon of the First Church. The house is one of seven of its period left in Cambridge that were occupied by patriots during the Revolution; all but one have been moved. Together they show the difference between modest patriot houses and the elegant Tory mansions along Brattle Street. Features include nine-over-six and eight-over-twelve windows on the rear elevation and bowed second-story window lintels. The house is still used as a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built for Aaron Hill","architectural_style":"Late Georgian/Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential, the same as its original use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.472644-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7905/63790550/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000807.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000807/a5141028b8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000807/a5141028b8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CambridgeMA_AaronHillHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CambridgeMA_AaronHillHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790550","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Hill_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715378"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hill-aaron-house-83000807/"}
