The form argues that because of extensive alterations it is not significant as Federal architecture, but it is an interesting study of how a house developed over about 150 years. It is listed under Criterion A.","narrative":"This clapboard farmhouse at 24 Coolidge Hill Road in Cambridge was begun in 1822 by Josiah Coolidge, who had bought 33-1/2 acres the year before. He built the ell first, and the main block probably started around 1825. The house was finished by 1828. It stood on the Coolidge Farm, which occupied a drumlin on the Charles River and was the last working farm in Cambridge until it was sold for subdivision in 1910. Around 1900 the house was remodeled: a jerkin-headed cross gable was removed, three dormers were added, the porches were enclosed, and two bay windows were built on the north end. These changes altered its original Federal character, so the house is not valued as a pure example of that style. It is recognized instead for its link to the farm and the growth of Coolidge Hill, and as a record of a house changing over roughly 150 years. It remains a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built for Josiah Coolidge","architectural_style":"Originally Federal; later altered (also described as Greek Revival in the continuation sheet)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form records extensive alterations, primarily in 1900.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.184044-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/7905/63790518/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000795.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000795/b65e13bfef-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000795/b65e13bfef-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Josiah_Coolidge_House,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4807.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Josiah_Coolidge_House,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4807.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790518","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josiah_Coolidge_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715651"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/coolidge-josiah-house-83000795/"}
