Built in 1837 for Mary Ann Fales, it is a center-entrance, five-bay variant of the local Greek Revival vernacular, with a Doric portico across the front and two bow-front bays with floor-length windows flanking the entrance. In 1852 the house was rented to a group of young men, among them geologist Josiah Dwight Whitney, astronomers Benjamin Apthorp Gould and Joseph Winlock, and Latinist George Martin Lane. They called it \"Clover Den\", an \"old Bachelor Hall\". Gould and Winlock reportedly set up a small observatory in the back yard, said to be the first in Cambridge. Mary Mann, mother of Horace Mann, bought the house in 1866, and it stayed in the Mann family until about 1890. The property was listed for its associations with Whitney, Gould and Winlock and as an important example of Greek Revival architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as a residential property; the form gives the present use as residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.971036-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7906/63790617/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000793.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000793/768be2735d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000793/768be2735d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cloverden_-_29_Follen_Street,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4050.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cloverden_-_29_Follen_Street,_Cambridge,_MA_-_IMG_4050.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790617","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloverden","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5135959"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/cloverden-83000793/"}
