Stacy and designed by architect F.R. Richmond.","why_significant":"The building is cited for its associations with local industries and the prominent Stacy family, and as a good local example of the Panel Brick style by a known architect. It was built for lease, following Springfield's pattern of renting to small, growing firms. J. Frank Duryea tested his first automobile on its top floor in late 1894.","narrative":"Built in 1893 at 41-43 Taylor Street in Springfield, this four-story brick industrial block was designed by local architect F.R. Richmond for machinery and mill supply dealer Edwin S. Stacy. Massive piers rise to a patterned cornice and divide the facade into single window bays, with segmental arched openings holding 10/10 sash and transoms on the first floor. The building is a local example of the Panel Brick style and has had no major alterations. It was constructed for lease, and its upper floors housed small manufacturing firms, in keeping with a common Springfield pattern. One tenant, J. Frank Duryea, tested his first gasoline automobile on the top floor in late 1894; a later version of that car won the 1895 Chicago Times-Herald race. Stacy's son Frank continued the business and served as Springfield's mayor from 1914 to 1918. Reviewers accepted the building for its architectural merit under criterion C, not for its associations with the Stacy family.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"F.R.
