It is also a good local example of Classical Revival style, and it is cited under criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built in 1918 at 1665 Main Street in Springfield, this limestone building was constructed expressly for the Hampden Savings Bank. Architect Max Westhoff, who arrived in Springfield in 1917 from Saranac Lake, New York, designed it in the Classical Revival style. The facade has a pedimented center entrance bay and large second-story windows set between Ionic pilasters. The bank was founded in 1852, the year Springfield was incorporated as a city, and one of its main purposes was to serve railroad workers, so it stayed within a few blocks of the depot. It shared rooms with Agawam National Bank until 1871, moved to the Fort Block in 1899, and occupied this building from 1918 until relocating to Harrison Street in 1952. The building has had no major alterations and was used as offices in 1965. It was recognized for its association with the bank's growth and as a good local example of classical revival design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Max Westhoff","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as offices as of 1965; the form reports no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.738251-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/7903/63790338/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000750.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000750/01fea85ea6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000750/01fea85ea6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hampden_Savings_Bank,_Springfield_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hampden_Savings_Bank,_Springfield_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790338","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampden_Savings_Bank","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5645996"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/hampden-savings-bank-83000750/"}
