It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It is also tied to the Burbach family and the adjacent United States Hotel.","narrative":"Located at 1113-1115 Main Street in Springfield, this three-story, five-bay brick commercial block was built in 1882 by Gerard Burbach. He ran the neighboring United States Hotel from the 1870s until 1894, and the block may have served as an annex to the hotel during the 1880s and 1890s. The facade shows brick coursing and window hoods typical of the period, with decorative merlons capping the corners. Simplified coursing wraps around to the south side, where paired upper-story windows now overlook a small park. The building is notable as one of the few smaller late 19th century commercial blocks that once dominated the southern end of Main Street, an area that served the growing South End residential neighborhood. It outlasted the hotel, which was demolished in 1915, and later housed a dry goods store, saloon, restaurant and furniture store. After a fire it was rehabilitated in 1981 and keeps its original design features.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Gerard Burbach","architectural_style":"Panel Brick","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 1981 after a fire, with renovation to offices proposed for 1981-82; present use is commercial/offices.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.71434-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/7903/63790323/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000739.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000739/e6228c946b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000739/e6228c946b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SpringfieldMA_BurbachAndBangsBlocks.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SpringfieldMA_BurbachAndBangsBlocks.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790323","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burbach_Block","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4998140"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/burbach-block-83000739/"}
