The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the block is a well-preserved example of late Italianate design and a well-documented representative of downtown Springfield's small-scale, later nineteenth-century commercial enterprises. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It meets criteria A and C.","narrative":"Rising four stories on Main Street in downtown Springfield, this narrow brick commercial building was put up around 1870 on land the Bangs family had owned for at least twelve years. It housed the Bangs Market, a small grocery run first by John Bangs as a flour and grain shop and later by his son Adam as a meat market until 1903. Later tenants included a watchmaker's shop and other businesses. The four-bay facade is lined with segmental arched windows under corbelled brick hoods, topped by a wide brick frieze and a decorative corbelled cornice. It was listed as a good example of the smaller late nineteenth-century commercial blocks once common along the southern part of Main Street. Together with its neighbors, it records the shift from mixed residential and commercial wooden buildings to a cohesive masonry streetscape of mercantile trade. It meets criteria A and C.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is commercial/office; adaptive reuse and exterior renovation were proposed for 1981-1982.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.772137-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7903/63790317/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000736.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000736/e6228c946b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000736/e6228c946b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SpringfieldMA_BurbachAndBangsBlocks.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SpringfieldMA_BurbachAndBangsBlocks.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790317","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangs_Block","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4855611"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/bangs-block-83000736/"}
