It is one of six houses in the Steep Brook area regarded as the best representatives of the city's pre-industrial period. Together they show Steep Brook's early prominence and Fall River's original agricultural character.","narrative":"Built around 1795, this 1½-story farmhouse on North Main Street in Fall River's Steep Brook area is thought to have been built by Luther Winslow, Jr., who married in 1795 and later died of yellow fever in the West Indies after going to sea. The five-bay clapboard house has a large central chimney, 12-over-12 windows, corner boards, a wide entablature and a doorway with fluted pilasters and a transom. A fieldstone wall and wooden fencing in front add to its rural late 18th century character. The house has remained remarkably intact and is a fine example of vernacular architecture of the period. It is one of six houses in Steep Brook considered the best representatives of Fall River's pre-industrial era. Their small scale, rural setting and linear arrangement along North Main Street contrast sharply with the development that followed construction of the city's first textile mill in 1811. It is still used as a single-family home.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Luther Winslow, Jr. (thought to be the builder)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is single family residence; the form describes the house as remarkably intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.435972-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/7893/63789363/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000732.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000732/850d0be76e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000732/850d0be76e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Marcbela (Marc N.
