A side ell was added in 1873.","why_significant":"It is described as one of Rehoboth's best preserved mid-18th-century gambrel cottages and one of very few houses of the period securely dated through deed research. It keeps its original form, plan and interior and exterior details. It is also tied to Aaron Wheeler, a farmer, mill and forge investor and Revolutionary War participant.","narrative":"Built around 1745 on Fairview Avenue in Rehoboth, this gambrel-roofed Georgian farmhouse sits about 300 feet from the road with its gable end facing the street. Aaron Wheeler (1722/23-1800) erected it soon after his father, Colonel Philip Wheeler, gave him a large tract of land in 1745. Wheeler farmed, bought a quarter share in a nearby sawmill in 1763 and held an interest in Peck's Forge. He and his son Simeon served in Revolutionary War campaigns. Stephen Bowen bought the house and part of the farm in 1818, and Bowen descendants have lived there since. The house is valued as one of Rehoboth's best preserved mid-18th-century gambrel cottages and one of few from the period securely dated by deeds. It keeps its original form, plan and architectural details. The bake oven's position in the east chamber and evidence from 1955 stabilization work suggest it began as an end-chimney house, with the west portion added later in the 18th century. A side ell was added in 1873.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is as a residence; stabilization work was carried out in 1955.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.262791-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/7895/63789559/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000730.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000730/73480f3156-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000730/73480f3156-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RehobothMA_AaronWheelerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RehobothMA_AaronWheelerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789559","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Wheeler_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4662530"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/wheeler-aaron-house-83000730/"}
