Its core was built around 1800 as an outbuilding and remodelled around 1850.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a well detailed and proportioned example of a three-bay sidehall Greek Revival cottage, a type that was uncommon in Rehoboth. It also shows how buildings in this conservative, economically limited town were repeatedly transformed in the 19th century. It is the only house built on Carpenter Street between the early 19th and mid 20th centuries.","narrative":"Set about 30 feet from Carpenter Street in rural Rehoboth, this small cottage began around 1800 as an outbuilding, probably a wash house and summer kitchen built by Peter or Thomas Carpenter. Samuel Viall bought it around 1850 and it was completely remodelled into a one-and-one-half story Greek Revival sidehall-plan house. The original brick foundation, unusual in Rehoboth, rises to a full story on the south side, where a center chimney, fireplace, oven and exposed post-and-beam framing survive. Inside, door and window moldings echo the channelled pilasters seen on larger Greek Revival buildings such as the Village Congregational Church. The north room was enlarged in 1953, with the original dado and trim reused or replicated. The Viall family, prosperous dairy farmers, owned the property into the twentieth century. It was listed for its architecture as a handsome example of an uncommon local house type that also shows the evolution of building form.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; core probably built by Peter or Thomas Carpenter","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is as a residence; the property has an attached garage and sunporch and a barn moved south of the house around 1940.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.05964-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/7895/63789575/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000728.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000728/508bc7d267-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000728/508bc7d267-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RehobothMA_SamuelViallHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RehobothMA_SamuelViallHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789575","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Viall_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7412827"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/viall-samuel-house-83000728/"}
