It is clapboard and shingle, with an attached garage and a 19th-century masonry carriage house.","why_significant":"The house is argued to embody distinctive characteristics of Georgian period architecture. It also shows an uncommon and possibly local variation in chimney design, with two triangular, canted end chimneys. It is one of two known examples of this treatment in Rehoboth and the only one in a 2½-story wood frame house.","narrative":"Set on a peninsula jutting north into Squannakonk Swamp in Rehoboth, this Georgian house dates to roughly 1750-1780. It faces south with its gable end toward Maple Lane, a road not fully paved until about 1950, and it was placed with regard to terrain and practicality rather than the road. Its most striking feature is a pair of triangular, canted end chimneys. The east stack has been covered after chimney fire damage, while the west remains intact. Few double-chimney houses of this type were built or survive in Rehoboth, and the house is the only 2½-story wood frame example. The original trabeated entrance, mantels and chair rails remain, although the central hall plan was partly altered in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Asa Goff bought the property in 1784, and the Goff family ran a dairy farm here until about 1920. Archaeological features include a possible original well and scattered 19th-century household debris.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; it is unclear whether Asa Goff built the house","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; the east chimney stack has been covered because of chimney fire damage, while the west stack is intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.381462-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7895/63789553/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000673.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000673/d0b42edbcf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000673/d0b42edbcf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RehobothMA_GoffHomestead.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RehobothMA_GoffHomestead.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789553","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goff_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5577244"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/goff-homestead-83000673/"}
