It is possibly the work of Thomas Carpenter III.","why_significant":"The house is considered one of Rehoboth's finest Federal period houses and a clear example of that style in a rural setting. It has a five-bay, center chimney and entrance plan with pure Federal details such as a pedimented doorway and a delicate fanlight. It is also one of two houses on Carpenter Street built by members of the Carpenter family around 1800.","narrative":"Built around 1800 at 60 Carpenter Street in Rehoboth, this five-bay Federal house is organized around a central chimney and entrance. The doorway has fluted pilasters supporting a pediment, topped by a fanlight with unusually delicate tracery and a central keystone motif. Inside, the east parlor has mitered moldings, and dentiled cornices appear on both floors. The central chimney has a bake oven on each story, and a two-story kitchen ell on the east end holds a full fireplace and another bake oven. Window sashes are replacement copies. The land came from Deacon Thomas Carpenter, who gave thirty-five acres to his grandson Christopher (1762-1840) about 1800. An older house stood on the property and may have been remodeled as his home, and there is some evidence the present building incorporates part of it. Possibly designed by Thomas Carpenter III, it is described as one of Rehoboth's finest Federal period houses and a clear rural example of the style. Small outbuildings from the 19th century and later remain nearby.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"possibly Thomas Carpenter III","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is as a residence; a number of small 19th century and later outbuildings stand on both sides of Carpenter Street.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.719237-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7895/63789535/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000643.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000643/25ad69ada8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000643/25ad69ada8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Christopher_Carpenter_House,_Rehoboth_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Christopher_Carpenter_House,_Rehoboth_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789535","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Carpenter_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5112067"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/carpenter-christopher-house-83000643/"}
