It was built as a two-family residence and is still used that way.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an outstanding and unusual example of well-developed Federal period architecture in Rehoboth, one of the town's few pure Federal houses. It is noted for the quality of its detail and its excellent preservation with no major alterations. It meets criterion C, and on present knowledge potentially criterion D because of an old, apparently undisturbed dump behind the house.","narrative":"Built about 1785 on Kelton Street in Rehoboth, this two-and-one-half story, five-bay house with a center entrance was designed as two residential units. Each floor has a full keeping room fireplace with a bake oven, and the downstairs unit is slightly larger. Interior details survive largely intact, including Doric-pilastered mantels, graining on a door and the staircase, and a saw-cut decorative stair string. The front facade carries a dentil cornice and a doorway with fanlight, pediment and flanking Doric pilasters. The attic windows keep their original twelve-over-twelve sashes. The land was held by the Kelton and Bowen families in the 18th century, and Nathan Bowen owned land and a house here before 1775. The property stayed in Bowen hands until the late 1800s. It is considered one of Rehoboth's few pure Federal period houses, and for its preserved architecture it qualifies under criterion C. A large, old dump near a swamp behind the house may be as old as the building, which suggests archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Used as a two-family residence, as originally built; the form reports no major alterations and excellent preservation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.395865-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/31/7895/63789531/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000633.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000633/645294ab84-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000633/645294ab84-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nathan_Bowen_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nathan_Bowen_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789531","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Bowen_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6968918"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/bowen-nathan-house-83000633/"}
