The caretaker's house is a well-preserved, largely unaltered Georgian-period cottage. Together with the club's preserved woodland, they reflect turn-of-the-century social ideals and the view of Rehoboth as semi-wilderness.","narrative":"Set well back from the road beside Bad Luck Reservoir (Warren Upper Reservoir) in Rehoboth, the Anawan Club occupies woodland first bought in 1898 by a group of Rhode Island businessmen for hunting and social gatherings. Membership was capped at forty. The clubhouse, built that year, is a one-story log building with a large single room, two massive fieldstone end chimneys, a rear service ell and a front porch facing the water. Its cedar logs were cut from an adjacent swamp and hewn by hand. It is regarded as a locally unique example of the log cabin type found in northern New England hunting camps, and as the only known local precedent for later log cabin homes. Nearby, the caretaker's house, dating to about 1750-1770 and bought by the club in 1898, is a five-bay, center-chimney Georgian cottage that keeps original panelling, doors and hardware. The club has kept its land as woodland, preserving the historic landscape.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Log cabin (clubhouse); Georgian (caretaker's house)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The club has operated continuously since 1898; the clubhouse is a private club and the caretaker's house is a residence, still serving as a caretaker's house. The clubhouse has no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.432007-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/7896/63789691/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000618.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000618/aca08959d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000618/aca08959d8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anawan_Club_Clubhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anawan_Club_Clubhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789691","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anawan_Club_Clubhouse_and_Caretaker%27s_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4752417"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/anawan-club-clubhouse-and-caretakers-house-83000618/"}
