Amos Fuller, with a c. 1830 barn and a 1850s law office building on the nominated land.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is historically significant for its ties to important local figures of the 18th and 19th centuries, including Lt. Amos Fuller, the Reverend William Ritchie and attorney Artemas Newell. It is also architecturally significant as the best preserved example of its type and period in Needham. The barn is the oldest extant barn in town.","narrative":"Set back from Nehoiden Street in Needham, this yellow-clapboard farmhouse began as a compact leanto-style dwelling built in 1754 by Lt. Amos Fuller, a selectman and representative to the General Court. It sits on the site of an earlier Fuller house, and some material from that house may have been reused. Over time the building grew into a sprawling form, with a large rear ell, a sunporch and later chimneys, yet the original five-bay, 2½-story core remains clear. Much early woodwork survives inside. Nearby stand a hand-hewn timber barn of about 1830, the oldest in town, and a small 1850s building used as a law office by Artemas Newell. The house was rebuilt and restored by the Reverend William Ritchie after 1830 and remained in the Newell family until 1920. It was listed for its local associations and as Needham's best preserved example of its type and period, within a green setting of woods and fields.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799, 1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition, altered over time; the form lists the property as occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.928516-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7961/63796199/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000596.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000596/305c26ca11-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000596/305c26ca11-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NeedhamMA_AmosFullerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NeedhamMA_AmosFullerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796199","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amos_Fuller_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4747870"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/fuller-amos-house-83000596/"}
