It was built in two phases, 1880-85 and 1889-90, to designs by J. Williams Beal.","why_significant":"The building is described as an intact, early example of commercial architecture in Quincy and as the work of a noted regional architect. It was one of the city's first large business blocks and has long been a landmark in Quincy Center. The nomination states it retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, location and setting.","narrative":"Dominating a corner of Quincy's business district, this crescent-shaped Jacobethan Revival block at Hancock and Temple Streets was built in two stages, 1880-85 and 1889-90. Heavy timber framing supports a pseudo-half-timbered facade with stucco panels, bay windows, seven steep cross gables and a slate roof. Boston architect J. Williams Beal designed it for John Q. Adams II, and it stayed in the Adams family until 1952. It was planned as an all-purpose building, with stores on the ground floor, offices above, an Odd Fellows Hall on the third floor and rooms on the upper levels. Doctors, lawyers, several mayors and legislators, a bank and the District Court of East Norfolk were among its tenants. Apart from altered ground-floor storefronts, the exterior remains largely intact. It was recognized as one of Quincy's first large business blocks and as a work of a noted regional architect.","period_of_significance":"1880-1885; 1889-1890","architect_builder":"J. Only the ground-floor storefronts have been significantly altered; rehabilitation of the upper floors and approximate restoration of the storefronts was in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.666272-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/7962/63796248/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83000593.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000593/01751fafbb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000593/01751fafbb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adams_Building_Quincy_MA_03.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adams_Building_Quincy_MA_03.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796248","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adams_Building_(Quincy,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4680299"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/adams-building-83000593/"}
