Its fieldstone construction is unusual for rural commercial buildings in the state, which were typically wood. It is also significant for commerce, having served area farms and plantations around the turn of the century.","narrative":"Built about 1894, this one-story fieldstone building in Gabbettville, a tiny rural community near LaGrange, served as a country store for the surrounding farms and plantations. Fanning and Frank Potts located it here because a railroad pass track offered a convenient place to unload merchandise. The store sold supplies for home, farm and plantation, along with horses and mules, and housed a post office for some years. The brothers also ran two cotton gins, a flour mill and a grist mill nearby. The rectangular building has a stepped front gable, a wide boxed roof overhang and a full-width porch. Its fieldstone, apparently quarried on a family plantation near the Chattahoochee River, is unusual, since rural stores were usually built of wood. About 1907 the building passed to William Metz, whose family held it into the 1970s. It later became offices. Surviving ledger books from the 1890s add to its commercial interest.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 and 1900- (specific date ca. 1894)","architect_builder":"\"Mr. Hart,\" builder","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Occupied; the interior was subdivided into offices in the 1970s, and the building has been used as a tenant house and for storage in the past.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.202507-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/83000246.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000246/9303a67e4c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000246/9303a67e4c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Potts_Brothers_Store;_West_Point,_GA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Potts_Brothers_Store;_West_Point,_GA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209749","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134464413"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/troup-county/potts-brothers-store-83000246/"}
