F. Cannon. The architect or builder is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be a relatively elaborate and intact example of local Victorian-era design, among the most elaborately detailed in Lavonia. Its oval front-gable windows and interior glass transoms are not found on other houses in the multiple resource area, and its octagonal cupola is shared with only one other Lavonia residence. Historically it was the home of a farmer and livestock dealer and later a hardware merchant and county clerk, occupations typical of the area.","narrative":"Built around 1900 at 126 West Avenue in Lavonia, this one-story frame house was the residence of J. F. Cannon, a farmer and livestock salesman who chose a town location close to schools and conveniences. It has a central hall plan, a high hipped metal roof, an octagonal cupola with paired small windows, and multiple gables forming bays, with dentil molding above the windows. The two front gables hold oval attic windows, and interior doors carry glass transoms. Several rooms retain period mantels. In 1914 the property passed to James McDaniel, a hardware partner and Franklin County clerk, and it later became a rental. In the 1950s baths were added and the house was divided into a duplex. The nominated area covers one acre of a larger wooded tract. The house was recognized for architecture and local history because it is an elaborately detailed, largely intact example of the Victorian style that gives Lavonia much of its character, with features found nowhere else in the survey area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian-inspired, central hall plan","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as vacant at present and in fair condition; it was divided into a duplex rental in the 1950s.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.103186-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/83000202.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206060","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/franklin-county/cannon-mcdaniel-house-83000202/"}
