It is also tied to the John Joseph Taylor and John Augustus Walker families and reflects the prosperity of Cochran in the early twentieth century.","narrative":"Hillcrest, also known as Cedar Hall, is a two-story Neoclassical house on a landscaped hilltop corner lot at 706 Beech Street in Cochran, Georgia. Built in 1910, it was a wedding present from businessman John Joseph Taylor to his daughter Alice on her marriage to John Augustus Walker. Taylor was for some years Cochran's leading merchant and banker. The weatherboarded house has a hipped roof, four tall corbeled chimneys, a two-story portico with Ionic columns, and a wrap-around porch. Inside are paneled wainscoting, pocket doors, an open stairway with urn-topped newels, and an arched room divider on Ionic columns. The house stayed in the family until 1965. After years as three apartments, it was restored as a single-family home beginning in 1970. It is considered significant as a fine local example of a style popular in Georgia during a period of growth, and for its links to the Taylor and Walker families.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date 1910)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neoclassical","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and used as a private residence; renovated in the 1970s after years of neglect and subdivision into three apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.729417-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/83000184.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000184/1b03bb3461-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000184/1b03bb3461-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hillcrest_House,_Cochran,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hillcrest_House,_Cochran,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207119","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillcrest_(Cochran,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16892314"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bleckley-county/hillcrest-83000184/"}
