It is a functionally designed small-town depot with a warehouse, office and waiting rooms. A local credit union that grew into the Alma Exchange Bank and Trust was founded there in 1930. It was apparently the only permanent depot built in Alma and served the local turpentine and lumber industries.","narrative":"Alma Depot is a one-story frame railroad station built in 1906 beside the former tracks in downtown Alma, Georgia. It has flush novelty siding, broad overhanging eaves, a hipped east end and a gabled west end. Inside, two waiting rooms with beaded-board paneling sit at the east end, an office with a bay window facing the tracks occupies the middle, and a large warehouse room fills the west end. It was apparently the only permanent depot the railroads built in Alma and served as the center of freight and passenger activity, especially for the turpentine and lumber industries. At its peak it saw as many as six passenger trains a day; passenger service ended in 1952. In 1930 a local credit union, later the Alma Exchange Bank and Trust, was founded there, an unusual use for a depot. The building was recognized for its architecture, its role in commerce and its place in the town's railroad history.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Functional small-town railroad depot; no formal style named","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as unoccupied and used for storage by the owner at the time of nomination; civic reuse plans had not yet been made.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.140237-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/83000182.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000182/5da12afdfb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83000182/5da12afdfb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alma_Depot,_Alma,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alma_Depot,_Alma,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206829","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alma_station_(Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16202786"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bacon-county/alma-depot-83000182/"}
