The present church was built in 1872 and incorporates parts of an original 1713 structure, with a nearby early nineteenth century rectory.","why_significant":"The church serves the oldest Episcopal congregation on Staten Island. Its picturesque Norman-style building evokes an English village church and contains fine American Arts and Crafts stained glass. The site also saw two skirmishes during the American Revolution, when the congregation was a stronghold of loyalist sentiment.","narrative":"Church of St. Andrew is an Episcopal parish church with a cemetery on a two-acre site beside Richmond Creek in the center of Staten Island. The congregation is the oldest Episcopal one on the island, and a stone church was completed in 1713 under a charter granted by Queen Anne. During the Revolution the congregation was strongly loyalist, and the church was the site of two skirmishes, in October 1776 and August 1777. After fires in 1867 and 1872, the surviving walls were encased in the present fieldstone and brick building of 1872. Its design draws on Norman Romanesque models and was probably prepared by New York architect and builder George Mersereau, though authorship is debated. The church has an open timber-braced roof and American Arts and Crafts stained glass. An organ annex was added in 1908 and Burch Hall in 1924. The churchyard holds gravestones dating from 1742, family vaults, and a stone wall built in 1855. An early nineteenth century rectory stands nearby.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"George (?)
