It is also an early and very fine example of an \"American Renaissance\" Italian villa by the prominent firm Peabody & Stearns. The nomination cites criteria A and C and notes that few of the largest Gilded Age estates remain.","narrative":"Wheatleigh is a former country estate in the northeast corner of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, overlooking the Stockbridge Bowl. Financier Henry Harvey Cook bought 250 acres in 1892 and commissioned the Boston firm Peabody & Stearns to design a 33-room Italian villa, built in 1893-1894 by Cutting & Bishop of Worcester. The house is buff Roman brick with terra cotta trim, slate hip roofs, a tiled terrace guarded by marble lions, and a garden front with a fountain. An octagonal, 100-foot water tower survives from the same decade. The original grounds also held greenhouses, a garage, barns and gatehouses, but the property has shrunk to 22 acres. The estate matters as one of the few large Gilded Age Berkshire summer seats still standing, and as an early, well-regarded example of the American Renaissance villa. Architect Charles McKim praised it as a successful adaptation of the Italian villa to modern use. It now operates as an inn and restaurant.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Architect: Peabody & Stearns of Boston; Builder: Cutting & Bishop of Worcester","architectural_style":"\"American Renaissance\" Italian villa","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Reduced from 250 acres to 22 acres, containing only the main house and water tower; the main house is used as an inn and restaurant.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.265315-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/7941/63794122/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004956.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004956/b4a0fed159-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004956/b4a0fed159-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wheatleigh,_Lenox_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wheatleigh,_Lenox_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794122","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatleigh","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7991918"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/wheatleigh-82004956/"}
