Its architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is an interesting example of Queen Anne design elements adapted for a firehouse, and that it retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship. It is also tied to the Adams Fire District, a quasi-governmental body formed in 1872, and was the most substantial of the district's nineteenth-century buildings, possibly serving as its central station.","narrative":"Built in 1890 on the east side of Park Street in Adams, this three-story brick building was constructed for the Adams Fire District, a quasi-governmental body created in 1872 to protect the town's mills and other buildings from fire. It was the largest of the district's nineteenth-century stations and may have acted as its central station. The facade combines a granite plaque reading A.F.D. and 1890, bands of decorative brickwork, rock-faced granite sills and lintels, and double-hung windows with colored glass panes that reflect Queen Anne styling. Though built free-standing, the small lot and the design suggest it was meant to join a row of buildings, and neighboring blocks later covered its north and south sides between 1893 and 1896. Most original features survive. The main change is a modern sliding garage door that replaced the original wagon doors when the building became the town's ambulance service in the mid-twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date 1890)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne design elements adapted for a firehouse","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Town-owned and occupied; converted in the mid-20th century to the town's ambulance service, with condition described as good and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.617621-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7942/63794242/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004949.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004949/25a6ded8c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004949/25a6ded8c1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ymblanter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adams_Park_Street_Firehouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ymblanter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adams_Park_Street_Firehouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794242","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Street_Firehouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7138056"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/park-street-firehouse-82004949/"}
