Its ground-floor stores with upper-floor apartments reflect Park Street's shift from residential to commercial use in the 1880s and 1890s. It is also described as the best local example of Italianate commercial architecture.","narrative":"Located on the west side of Park Street in Adams Center, this 3 1/2-story red brick block holds two storefronts on the ground floor and two apartments on each of the upper two floors. Because of the hillside site, only the street facade is full height, while the rear is two stories. Marble ashlar forms the foundation, and the brickwork includes banding, arched window hoods with marble sills, plate-glass storefronts and a bracketed wooden cornice with jig-saw ornament. The block appears in the town's first directory of 1889-1890 and was among the first brick blocks on Park Street. Its original owner, Patrick J. Barrett, a mason, lived and worked there, while the stores were rented to a dry goods merchant and a grocery firm. The building was listed because it shows the change of Park Street from residential to commercial use and remains one of the best preserved Italianate commercial buildings in Adams, with very few alterations.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1880-1889","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied; described as nearly unaltered from its original design, with few changes such as added concrete stairs and extra glazing bars on the storefronts.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.32313-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7941/63794196/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004945.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004945/78caf57276-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004945/78caf57276-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:P._J._Barrett_Block,_Adams_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:P._J._Barrett_Block,_Adams_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794196","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._J._Barrett_Block","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715805"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/barrett-p-j-block-82004945/"}
