It is also tied to Arthur Daniels and to local organizations that first occupied it, including the town library, post office and a military company. It remains essentially intact.","narrative":"Standing on the east side of Park Street in Adams Center, this three-story brick commercial block was built in 1894-1895 by Arthur Daniels, a prominent local businessman. It was the largest commercial block of its period in Adams. Its facade is faced in yellow brick and carries ornate Renaissance Revival detail, including a terra cotta cornice with a grapevine frieze, arched windows with moulded archivolts, and a dressed granite entry surround. The structure uses fireproof masonry and steel construction. When it opened, the town library and post office occupied the first floor, offices filled the second, and the third held a large hall that served as the armory for a local military company in which Daniels was an active member. Daniels also held roles in local paper, marble, gas and banking enterprises. Alterations are minor: the original storefronts are covered with modern materials, some transoms are blocked, and a few rear windows were changed. The building keeps its major architectural features.","period_of_significance":"1894-95","architect_builder":"Built by Arthur Daniels; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Renaissance Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good to excellent condition, with commercial use; the original storefronts are encased in modern materials.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.655338-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/7943/63794334/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004944.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004944/a1a0cbed8b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004944/a1a0cbed8b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armory_Block,_Adams_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Armory_Block,_Adams_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794334","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armory_Block","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4793755"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/armory-block-82004944/"}
