It is associated with several distinguished families and is one of the clearest examples of the Tuscan Villa style on Cape Cod. It was nominated under criteria B and C.","narrative":"Port Royal House is a two-story wood-frame residence at 606 Main Street in Chatham, built in 1863 in the Tuscan Villa style. It sits on its original site, set back from the street on three low terraces, overlooking a busy intersection and Veterans Park. The flat roof, full-length front veranda, heavy horizontal trim and carved paired brackets give it a strong horizontal character. Inside, inlaid floors, graining, tin ceilings and a dumbwaiter survive. Sea captain Seth Eldridge had it built after admiring a house in Port Royal, Jamaica, and obtaining its plans. In 1872 Emma Nickerson bought it from his estate, and the Nickerson family, local merchants, have owned it since. After an 1877 storm eroded the shore near the Twin Lights, much of Chatham's center shifted to the Main Street area where the house stands. It was listed for its association with notable families and as a well-preserved regional example of its style, one that has changed little in over a century.","period_of_significance":"1863","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Tuscan Villa","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, occupied as a private residence, with some alterations noted; original porch and roof balustrades and a balustraded fence have been destroyed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.956409-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7939/63793976/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004943.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004943/174b1d7afd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004943/174b1d7afd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Port_Royal_House,_Chatham,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Port_Royal_House,_Chatham,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793976","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Royal_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7230905"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/port-royal-house-82004943/"}
