It is also tied to the agricultural history of southern Andover. The property is said to retain integrity of design, materials, workmanship and setting.","narrative":"Set on a lot of more than one acre with about 375 feet of frontage, this two-and-a-half-story clapboard house at 15-17 Porter Road in Andover was built around 1830-40 by farmer Asa Abbott (1770-1851). He was the fifth generation of his family on the farm site and was active in town affairs. He probably built the house after his father's death in 1826. It was planned as a duplex: Asa left the east half to his son Asa Albert Abbott and the west half to his son Sylvester, and the brothers kept farming the land, which stayed in the family until about 1900. The Greek Revival design has a gable roof, two centered chimneys, a six-bay facade, recessed classical doorways with sidelights at opposite ends, and windows with plain cornerblocks described as distinctively Andover. Original one and one-and-a-half story ells remain. The house is valued as an uncommon rural duplex and for its link to southern Andover's farming past.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Asa Abbott (original owner and builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form lists the house as divided into two residences (15 and 17 Porter Road).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.805061-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/7899/63789939/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004833.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004833/f91490adec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004833/f91490adec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_AsaAndSylvesterAbbotHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_AsaAndSylvesterAbbotHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789939","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asa_and_Sylvester_Abbot_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4803184"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/abbot-asa-and-sylvester-house-82004833/"}
