It is described as one of the oldest houses standing in Andover. The form states it meets Criteria A and C and retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship and setting.","narrative":"Located at 88 Lowell Street in Andover, this two-story clapboard house dates to about 1670-73 and is among the oldest buildings still standing in the town. It began as a four-room, lean-to dwelling built for Daniel and Hannah Chandler Bigsby, and it was standing by 1688. Later changes include an 18th-century rear ell, hipped roofs, a pedimented center vestibule and a Georgian renovation, yet the southern orientation and broad facades with small, narrow windows still point to its age. The property operated as a farm until the late 19th century and passed through the Bigsby and Abbot families, including Capt. Jeduthan Abbot, who held 91 acres in 1798. It was sold to the Ward family in 1879, and the Wards lived there until 1944. It was listed for its First Period architecture and for its links to locally prominent families.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period (altered by Georgian renovation in the late 18th century)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; a garage stands as an outbuilding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.249166-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7902/63790242/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004830.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004830/6151129240-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004830/6151129240-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_ChandlerBigsbyAbbotHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_ChandlerBigsbyAbbotHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790242","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandler-Bigsby-Abbot_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5071130"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/chandler-bigsby-abbot-house-82004830/"}
