The nomination states that it retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship and setting.","narrative":"Built around 1851-52, this Italianate mansion at 166 North Main Street in Andover was the home of Nathan Frye (1808-1894), a manufacturer. Frye became president of the Marland Manufacturing Co. after founder Abraham Marland died in 1849 and ran the company for nearly 30 years before selling the Marland Mills in 1879. The house stood next to the mills on land that once covered several acres. It has two and a half stories, an F-shaped plan, a gable roof with pedimented ends, corner quoins, tall windows with bracketed sills and cornices, and a corner porch with Ionic columns. One- and two-story gabled wings were added. The building later became commercial and office space, and additions and renovations in the late twentieth century altered parts of it, including a porch. It was listed for its association with Frye and as an early, well-executed example of Italianate design in the town.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is commercial; converted to commercial/office use about the 1970s, with late 20th-century commercial renovation including alteration of a one-story porch on a wing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.014992-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7899/63789953/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004824.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004824/678feb3662-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004824/678feb3662-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_NathanFryeHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_NathanFryeHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789953","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Frye_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6969065"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/frye-nathan-house-82004824/"}
