It is also significant for its association with the Manning family, who were farmers, shoemakers and a minister. It is said to retain integrity of design, materials, workmanship and setting.","narrative":"Built around 1760 for Hezekiah Ballard, a farmer and later tavernkeeper, this Georgian house at 37 Porter Road in Andover is a long, narrow, 2½-story clapboard building with a gambrel roof, center chimney and five-bay facade. Its most unusual feature is the gambrel roof, which is uncommon in Andover and one of only two known from the period. The simple, unembellished facade keeps its original window sash, and two-story ells at the rear are original. In 1771 Ballard sold the homestead to Thomas Manning, a cordwainer who kept a small shop on the property. The house stayed in the Manning family through generations of farmers and shoemakers, including a son who became a clergyman after attending Andover Theological Seminary. Two small side porches were added in the 20th century, and a cottage stands as an outbuilding. The house was listed for its architecture and its link to the Manning family, and it retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship and setting.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Residential use; the form says the house has remained in the Manning family and descendants continue to occupy it.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.766267-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7899/63789917/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004817.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004817/de0a98119f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004817/de0a98119f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_ManningHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_ManningHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789917","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manning_House_(Andover,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6750866"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/manning-house-82004817/"}
