It is also tied to the Creef family's boat building trade on Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks, and to Creef Jr., builder of the Hattie Creef.","narrative":"Built in the late 1890s on a former cart path that became Manteo's Budleigh Street, this two-story Victorian cottage was the home of George Washington Creef Jr., a master boat builder on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Its Greek Cross plan, board-and-batten walls, shingled gable ends and sawn and carved porch ornament give it a Gothic cottage character. Inside, vertical and diagonal tongue-and-groove sheathing and ornamental mantels survive. Creef learned the trade from his father, who designed the local shad boat, and built the sailboat Hattie Creef in 1889. That vessel later carried freight, mail and passengers between the island and the mainland, and transported the Wright brothers and their supplies. The house is considered the most accomplished 19th-century dwelling left in the county seat. It remained in the Creef family for decades and has kept a high degree of integrity, which together with its link to the local boat building industry underlies its local significance.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"George Washington Creef, Jr. (owner and builder); the form's Builder/Architect field says Unknown","architectural_style":"Victorian cottage with Gothic cottage flavor, Greek Cross plan, board and batten","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, unaltered and on its original site; the family vacated it in 1963, though the form's status boxes mark it occupied and as a private residence.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.329598-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/7/7199/47719907/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/82004798.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004798/b7f9785e2e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004798/b7f9785e2e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Herbie03","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Creef_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Herbie03</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Creef_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719907","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington_Creef_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18206162"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/dare-county/creef-george-washington-house-82004798/"}
