It has a one-and-one-half story south wing added around 1840.","why_significant":"The house is presented as a significant example of the Federal-Greek Revival transitional style in northern New York, with materials and workmanship of the highest quality. It is also tied to the wealthy landowners who bought large parcels in the 1820s, and later to the Chapman family, Morristown's leading family in the nineteenth century.","narrative":"Built in 1821 on a hilltop at the north side of Morristown, this limestone house combines Federal and Greek Revival elements. The two-and-one-half story main block has a four-bay facade of dressed stone, a hipped roof with a balustraded deck, and a Federal doorway topped by a tripartite window. Less prominent walls use rougher stone, and fretwork grills cover the attic windows. Inside, a broad central hall leads to a double drawing room with classical woodwork and black marble mantels. A south wing, added around 1840, holds a large kitchen with bake ovens, a cooking fireplace and a dumbwaiter. Samuel Stocking of Utica had the house built soon after the township was formed, apparently as a land speculation, and never moved his family there. Within two decades it passed to Augustus Chapman, whose family led Morristown in the nineteenth century and lived there until 1892. It is noted as an important example of transitional architecture in northern New York.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal and Greek Revival transitional","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and used as a summer residence; the porch has been removed.
