It was the first building of the Agricultural complex and remains its centerpiece. Architecturally it is a notable example of the flexibility of the Classic tradition.","narrative":"Wellman Hall sits at the top of a rise on the central Berkeley campus of the University of California, its main facade facing south along the campus's major east-west axis. John Galen Howard designed it as Agriculture Hall, and it was dedicated on November 20, 1912. It was renamed in 1967 for Harry Richard Wellman, then Acting President of the University. The building has a rusticated granite base, a tiled hip roof, a copper cornice and a central projecting apse with an arched entrance. Howard specified high-quality granite, copper and terra cotta. It was the first building of the agriculture complex, which also includes Hilgard and Giannini Halls, and it remains the centerpiece. Entomology and landscape gardening programs used it early on. Landscape Architecture moved out in 1965-1966, and the building was remodeled for Entomology, though the exterior remained intact. It was listed for its link to California agricultural education and its Classic design.","period_of_significance":"1900-present","architect_builder":"John Galen Howard","architectural_style":"Neo-Classic; Beaux Arts academic-Classic with romantic-Classic influence of the French school of Ledoux","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as good, altered, original site; interior remodeled in 1965-1966 for the Entomology Department without impairing exterior integrity.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.082264-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/82004653.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004653/88794a2ae8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004653/88794a2ae8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wellman_Hall_(Berkeley,_CA).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wellman_Hall_(Berkeley,_CA).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857354","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q119361209"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/alameda-county/wellman-hall-82004653/"}
