Bernard Maybeck designed the original wing in 1902, and later architects added to it.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the earliest campus buildings, with unequaled associations for faculty and the community. Despite many additions it is described as organically grown and architecturally harmonious, with a regional design suited to Berkeley. Faculty Glade has long served as a social setting and was also an Ohlone campsite and burial ground.","narrative":"Sited at the west end of Faculty Glade on the University of California's Berkeley campus, the Faculty Club began in 1902 as a Bernard Maybeck design. Its exterior combines sand plaster, redwood shingles, a Mission tile roof, heavy wooden corbels and arched openings suggesting California Mission forms. The Great Hall has exposed timber trusses and a massive tiled fireplace. Later work by John Galen Howard, Warren Perry, W. S. Wellington and other firms more than doubled the building, yet the nomination describes it as architecturally harmonious. The club grew out of a faculty dining association and was financed by faculty subscriptions. It also offers lodging, and historian Henry Morse Stephens lived in a tower room Maybeck designed for him. The surrounding glade, bounded by Strawberry Creek, has hosted ceremonies and gatherings. It was also an Ohlone campsite and burial ground, and excavations for the building uncovered artifacts and skeletons. These architectural, educational and social associations support its listing.","period_of_significance":"1900-present","architect_builder":"Bernard Maybeck, J. G. Howard, Warren Perry, W. S.
