An Italianate dwelling of about 1882 received a Richardsonian Romanesque front facade in 1891.","why_significant":"The facade is Staunton's only domestic example of the Richardsonian Romanesque style and among the first works of the architectural firm Collins and Hackett. The house also shows the shift in local taste from Italianate delicacy to Romanesque solidity. Its later porches make it a textbook case of changing styles around the turn of the century.","narrative":"Built in two stages, this house at 215 Kalorama Street in Staunton combines a plain brick Italianate dwelling of about 1882 with a monumental brownstone front added in 1891. Local architects Collins and Hackett designed the new facade in the Richardsonian Romanesque style for original owner Arista Hoge, a businessman who founded an insurance agency and served as city treasurer from 1885 until his death in 1923. The facade has a rounded turret with a conical slate roof, a large Syrian arch at the entrance, and wrought-iron Art Nouveau railings. A Queen Anne side porch and a Colonial Revival porch were added in the following years. Inside, features include a curved living room wall, a pierced-brass radiator cover and parquet flooring. The house is considered Staunton's only domestic example of its style and illustrates how local tastes changed around the turn of the century. It remained in the Hoge family until the 1970s.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1882 and 1891","architect_builder":"Collins and Hackett","architectural_style":"Richardsonian Romanesque (1891 facade) over an Italianate house of ca. 1882, with Queen Anne and Colonial Revival porches","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the exterior is largely unchanged since about 1905 and most original interior fabric is intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.34232-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/27/6838/41683827/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82004601.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004601/88d44f4411-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004601/88d44f4411-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Staunton,_Virginia_(6262002225).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Staunton,_Virginia_(6262002225).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85000299","name":"Gospel Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/gospel-hill-historic-district-85000299/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683827","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arista_Hoge_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16844143"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/staunton/hoge-arista-house-82004601/"}
