Its lavish wood shingle cladding and largely intact elaborate interior make it one of the best examples of its style in the region.","narrative":"Standing on a raised corner lot at Coalter Street and Berkeley Place, beside the Mary Baldwin College campus, this three-story house in Staunton's Gospel Hill neighborhood is a showpiece of Queen Anne design. Construction began in 1896 for R.H. Catlett, a wealthy local attorney, who died that year; his widow, Fannie, saw it completed in 1897. The lower floors are rough-faced yellow-brown fieldstone, while the upper stories are covered in dark fishscale shingles. A steep hipped roof is broken by gables, dormers and a rounded tower, and a verandah wraps three sides. Inside are nine different fireplaces, many leaded and stained glass windows, an oak butler's pantry, original marble bathroom fixtures and oval rooms in the turret. The house stayed in the Catlett family until 1973. It is recognized as an unusually sophisticated turn-of-the-century dwelling that survives with few significant alterations.","period_of_significance":"1896-7","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; in use as a rest home (retirement home for ladies) at the time of nomination, in good condition and largely unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.674818-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/6837/41683787/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82004600.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004600/8533dd9967-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004600/8533dd9967-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Staunton,_Virginia_(6262540154).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Staunton,_Virginia_(6262540154).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85000299","name":"Gospel Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/gospel-hill-historic-district-85000299/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683787","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catlett_House_(Staunton,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16825980"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/staunton/catlett-house-82004600/"}
