The earliest part was standing by 1800, with additions around 1840 and 1860.","why_significant":"The mill served as the town mill of Washington from the early national period to the end of the 19th century. It keeps much of its antebellum flour-milling machinery in good repair, making it a well-preserved example of the grain and milling industry in Virginia's 19th-century economy. It is also believed to have served as a neutral bartering place between Union and Confederate lines during the Civil War.","narrative":"Washington Mill is a five-level frame mill with a gambrel roof, set on the Rush River at the eastern edge of the town of Washington in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Its earliest section was standing by 1800, and the third and fourth floors were added around 1840 and 1860. The building has two structural sections with hand-hewn, pegged timbers, a rubble stone basement and a first story with stone grinding wheels. The fourth floor still holds much of the flour-making equipment, including a wooden paddle conveyor, a long sifter and many wooden gears. Ownership passed through families such as the Redds, Calverts, Garwoods, Cheeks and Jetts. The mill served as Washington's town mill until the late 1800s and operated as a quasi-public utility for local farmers. It may have been a neutral trading point during the Civil War. A 1950 concert by the Virginia Symphony was held there. Siding and some stairs are later replacements.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1800","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and vacant, in fair condition and altered; the owner at the time of nomination planned to restore it for commercial use.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.375904-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/6828/41682835/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82004583.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004583/3c999403b7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004583/3c999403b7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"self","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Calvert_Mill_in_May_2016.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">self</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Calvert_Mill_in_May_2016.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682835","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvert_Mill/Washington_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5024273"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rappahannock-county/calvert-mill-washington-mill-82004583/"}
