Burkholder.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it Lynchburg's chief black architectural landmark and, when new, the city's largest church with its tallest spire. It was designed by a white architect but built with black labor, and black artisans produced much of the interior work. The congregation, organized in 1843, is regarded as the mother church of the city's black Baptist congregations.","narrative":"Court Street Baptist Church, at the corner of Court and Sixth streets in Lynchburg, is a red brick church begun in 1879 and finished in 1880. Its plan recalls a New England meetinghouse, with a central tower, a mansard roof and an octagonal belfry topped by a copper-clad spire. Italianate windows and hood molds decorate the walls. Architect Robert C. Burkholder designed it, and black labor built it, including a walnut pulpit made by J. W. Green. The church replaced a building torn down after an October 1878 balcony panic that killed eight people, and its iron balcony supports were set on solid rock in response. Some white neighbors objected to a black church on a fashionable street, but local opinion shifted as it rose. The congregation dates to 1843 and is regarded as the mother church of the city's black Baptist congregations. It also helped found a seminary in 1886.","period_of_significance":"1879","architect_builder":"Robert Calhoun Burkholder","architectural_style":"Modified Italianate, with a Second Empire mansard-roofed tower","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition, largely unaltered since completion, and still housing a large and active congregation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.816398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/6817/41681791/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82004569.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004569/e504b6b853-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004569/e504b6b853-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Court_St_Bapt_Lynchburg_Nov_08.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Court_St_Bapt_Lynchburg_Nov_08.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"12000019","name":"Fifth Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/fifth-street-historic-district-12000019/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681791","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_Street_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5178276"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lynchburg/court-street-baptist-church-82004569/"}
