It keeps the traditional three-bay single-pile form but adds elaborate Italianate sawn and carved ornament inside and out. It is also tied to Hockman, a prominent local builder, and later to Col. Oliver B. Roller, mayor of Harrisonburg.","narrative":"Built between 1870 and 1872 at the corner of East Market and Broad streets in Harrisonburg, this brick-and-frame house was designed and constructed by local builder Anthony Hockman for his own family. It follows the familiar three-bay \"I\"-house shape but departs from local restraint with a projecting central bay, a low gable, a hipped-roof cupola, bracketed cornices, molded pilasters and an elaborate front porch. Inside, a circular staircase, leaded glass, stenciled ceilings and Eastlake hardware survive. Hockman worked with William Bucher and helped drive the town's rebuilding after the Civil War. After his death in 1886, the house passed to the family of Col. Oliver B. Roller, mayor of Harrisonburg until 1911, who made modest craftsman-style changes around 1905-07. Restored around 1979-80 for office use, it remains one of the city's best Victorian houses and shows how Italianate ornament reached Harrisonburg.","period_of_significance":"1870-72","architect_builder":"Hockman and Bucher","architectural_style":"Victorian; Italianate trim on a traditional Georgian \"I\"-house plan","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored for office space around 1979-80; a work in progress at the time of the form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.852608-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/6812/41681206/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82004565.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004565/3108882471-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004565/3108882471-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Strawser","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anthony_Hockman_House_Harrisonburg_VA_Sept_2013.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Strawser</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anthony_Hockman_House_Harrisonburg_VA_Sept_2013.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"08000026","name":"Old Town Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/old-town-historic-district-08000026/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681206","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Hockman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15181512"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/harrisonburg/hockman-anthony-house-82004565/"}
