Its original section has distinctive masonry details, and its additions illustrate changing tastes in regional domestic architecture. It is also one of the few antebellum structures left in Rocky Mount and a key local landmark.","narrative":"Begun around 1830 on a corner lot near the top of Mount Pleasant in Rocky Mount, this house started as a single-cell brick dwelling on a high basement under a gable roof. Its walls are laid in Flemish bond with a molded brick cornice, gauged-brick jack arches over the basement windows, and unusual half-round brick columns beside the front door. Robert T. Woods was the original owner, and Morrison Meade acquired the property in 1834 and later enlarged it. A remodeling around 1837 joined the front section to a brick kitchen with a frame middle section. Further additions followed, including a two-level gallery, a shed addition, a board-and-batten wing and a Greek Revival porch. The result is a picturesque house of about ten rooms that looks modest from the street. It was listed as an interesting example of vernacular architecture and as one of the few surviving antebellum buildings in Rocky Mount. It has served as a residence through the twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular, with Greek Revival porch and Victorian sawnwork detail","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still serving as a residence; the form lists it as private residence, with condition marked unaltered and original site, and checks both occupied and unoccupied with work in progress.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.91096-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6807/41680750/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82004557.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004557/a0ec4a9da3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004557/a0ec4a9da3-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woods-Meade_House_in_Rocky_Mount.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woods-Meade_House_in_Rocky_Mount.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99000683","name":"Rocky Mount Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/rocky-mount-historic-district-99000683/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680750","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woods%E2%80%93Meade_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713562"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/franklin/woods-meade-house-82004557/"}
