It was built for Edward Ker, a prominent planter and politician.","narrative":"Shepherd's Plain is a Georgian house overlooking Nandua Creek and Kusian Cove near Pungoteague in Accomack County, Virginia. Built between 1755 and 1775 for planter and politician Edward Ker, it has a wood-frame center of five bays flanked by Flemish-bond brick ends. Ker enlarged the familiar one-and-a-half-story, brick-ended Eastern Shore house into a two-story, double-pile dwelling. The north end carries unusual rusticated window trim, raised quoins that follow the roof rake, and rubbed-brick arches, probably inspired by Batty Langley's 1750 builders' guide. Inside, a central hall holds an open-well stair, and the northwest parlor has full paneling, fluted pilasters, and a dentil cornice. The land was patented in the mid-17th century by William Andrews and passed to the Shepherd family before Ker. Despite many owners and a period of abandonment, the house kept its main features, and open fields and water views still surround it.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799 (specific dates: third quarter 18th century)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as unoccupied and in good condition, with a period of abandonment in its history; the current owners were restoring it at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.635088-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/6792/41679221/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82004531.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004531/2abaa4f8f2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004531/2abaa4f8f2-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"unknown HABS photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shepherd%27s_Plain_HABS_VA1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">unknown HABS photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shepherd%27s_Plain_HABS_VA1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679221","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepherd%27s_Plain","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14692393"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/accomack-county/shepherds-plain-82004531/"}
