Its wrap-around veranda with an ogee curve roof is described as possibly the only example of its kind in the city. It also keeps much of its original fabric with only minor alterations.","narrative":"This two-story wood frame house at 3301 Avenue L in Galveston was built in 1892-93 for John Hagemann, a prosperous grocer and produce merchant who had moved his business to the Strand, then Texas' most important financial center. He contracted Richard Zincke to build it in September 1892. The house blends Italianate and Queen Anne features: a multi-hipped roof with broad bracketed eaves reflects the former, while the asymmetrical plan and ornate porch woodwork reflect the latter. Its most distinctive element is a one-story wrap-around porch with an ogee-shaped metal roof, turned posts, arched handrail and openwork frieze, possibly the only one of its kind in Galveston. The house stands on a brick pier foundation with clapboard siding. It remained in the Hagemann family until the 1920s and has changed little since completion, apart from enclosed rear and west porches and a small greenhouse. A carriage house on the lot was sold separately and is excluded.","period_of_significance":"1892-1893","architect_builder":"Richard Zincke","architectural_style":"Victorian Italianate and Queen Anne (transitional hybrid)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; described as in excellent condition and virtually unaltered, with the interior refurbished.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.811868-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/90/9719/40971990/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/82004505.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004505/b17e940df6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004505/b17e940df6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jim Evans","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hagemann_Cobb_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Evans</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hagemann_Cobb_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971990","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002024"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/galveston-county/hagemann-john-house-82004505/"}
