The Walker House was built in 1901 and the Rogers House in 1904-05.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the two houses are Brownwood's finest and least altered early twentieth century Colonial Revival mansions. They are among the few survivors of a once well-to-do neighborhood and reflect the prosperity and prominence of two leading local families. They also show Beaux Arts influence reaching a West Texas town.","narrative":"Two large brick Colonial Revival houses stand side by side at 701 and 707 Center Street, just southwest of downtown Brownwood. J. A. Walker, a wholesale grocery founder and benefactor of Howard Payne University, built the first in 1901. R. B. Rogers, a dry goods merchant, built the second in 1904-05. Both are two-and-a-half stories with columned, balconied entry porticos, central-hall plans, and interiors with parquet or inlaid wood floors. The Rogers House retains features such as pocket doors, a working central vacuum system and original wood outbuildings. The Walker House received a rear porch in 1910 and a 1920s garage apartment. The architect and builder of both are unknown. The houses survive amid encroaching commercial development and are described as being among the last remnants of a neighborhood that once held many of the city's wealthiest residents. They are recognized for their architecture and their link to prominent local families.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Both houses are described as in excellent condition, occupied as private residences and restored by their owners; the Rogers House outbuildings are in fair condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.900062-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/9714/40971401/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/82004494.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004494/e81b260476-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004494/e81b260476-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walkerhouse1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walkerhouse1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971401","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107319410"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/brown-county/walker-j-a-house-and-rogers-r-b-house-82004494/"}
