Corpus Christi Street in Beeville, Bee County, Texas, completed in 1906 for hardware merchant Albert Praeger and attributed to W.C. Stevenson.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it arguably the best surviving early twentieth century commercial structure in Beeville. It is distinguished by round-arched second-floor windows, polychromatic brickwork and an unusual wrap-around awning with Ionic columns. It is one of few downtown buildings that retains much of its original character and it complements the adjacent Bee County Courthouse.","narrative":"Built in 1906 at the corner of Corpus Christi and Washington Streets in Beeville, this two-story buff brick commercial building faces the Bee County Courthouse square. Albert Praeger, a hardware merchant who had come to Beeville at age twenty-two, erected it to house his store and tin shop. The architect is believed to be W.C. Stevenson, who designed several structures in the city. Paired round-arched windows on the upper floor, polychrome brick detailing, a corbeled cornice and brick pediments give it a Romanesque Revival character. A wrap-around awning on cast iron Ionic columns is unusual for a commercial building. The store operated until 1943, and later tenants occupied the space, with apartments added upstairs after 1925. Some alterations were made over the years, but most were reversible, and a restoration was removing the less sympathetic changes. It is regarded as one of the best surviving early twentieth century commercial buildings in the city.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"attributed to W.C.
