It has a 1.5-story main block, a small barn and a 1-story connecting ell.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the oldest and most representative residential buildings in Holden, with integrity of location, design, workmanship and materials. Its succession of owners, including town founders, a Revolutionary soldier, mill owners and the Rogers family, parallels Holden's development from farming town to mill town to suburb. It also has potential for historic archaeological deposits near the house and barn.","narrative":"Built in 1733 near the center of Holden, this small Cape-type cottage sits on about a quarter acre behind an original stone wall. The 1.5-story clapboard main block has a low gable roof, a central chimney and a three-bay facade. A one-story ell and a small barn extend from it, and all sections rest on granite foundations. The exterior has not been altered, and the interior has been restored to much of its early appearance. The house was listed for its age, its representative design and the people who lived in it. Early owners included Abraham Newton, who signed the 1740 petition to incorporate Holden, and Edmund Hall, a Revolutionary War soldier. Colonel Samuel Damon and his son, a mill owner and legislator, also held the property. Members of the Rogers family lived here for over a century, through 1940. Its story follows the town's shift from farming to milling and then to suburban living. Archaeological deposits may survive near the house and barn.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799, 1800-1899 (specific date 1733)","architect_builder":"Probably John Hubbard","architectural_style":"Early Georgian vernacular Cape-type cottage","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Excellent condition, occupied private residence, original site; exterior unaltered and interior restored to much of its original condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.51629-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/45/7971/63797145/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82004471.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004471/dccc827ac1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82004471/dccc827ac1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoldenMA_RogersHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoldenMA_RogersHouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"95001031","name":"Holden Center Historic District (Boundary Increase)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/holden-center-historic-district-boundary-increase-95001031/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797145","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogers_House_(Holden,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7359296"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/rogers-house-82004471/"}
