It is also significant for the role of Daniel Steckel and his descendants in the early history and development of the borough, including the tannery business and public service.","narrative":"Built in 1803 by Daniel Steckel in Bath, Northampton County, this two and one half story Federal style house is constructed of coursed ashlar at the front and rubble limestone elsewhere, with chestnut timber framing. It was intended as a showplace for the developing settlement, and its interior retains more than 85 percent of its original fabric, including Federal trim, six-panel doors, pedimented door surrounds, original flooring and corner fireplaces with original mantels. Steckel operated a tannery nearby, selling leather in Philadelphia and New York City, and his family later led the tannery business and held public offices, including sheriff and prothonotary. The Steckel family is regarded as the founders of the community. The house is considered probably the finest surviving Federal building in the borough, and it is the oldest of the three structures still standing from the 1816 village survey. Many similar buildings in the Bath area have been altered, which adds to the house's value as a rare example of its period.","period_of_significance":"1803","architect_builder":"Daniel Steckel","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The document states the entire structure is in good condition and contains a large percentage of its original material; the roof is covered with modern shingles.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:32.570645-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/82003802.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003802/5131140e08-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003802/5131140e08-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Shuvaev","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Steckel_House_03.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Shuvaev</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Steckel_House_03.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71994573","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Steckel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5218833"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/northampton-county/steckel-daniel-house-82003802/"}
