Its register is said to include many prominent national figures. The complex also reflects the Victorian fashion for vacationing at health spas and resorts, and its growth by successive additions.","narrative":"Begun in 1848 by Joseph Konigmacher on a tract near Ephrata, the Mt. Springs Hotel grew through a series of additions into one of the best-known watering places in eastern Pennsylvania. The complex combines an 1812 sandstone farmhouse, a stone house traditionally dated to 1753, and a main hotel built in four stages around 1848 to 1853, with later frame outbuildings. By 1860 it was said to accommodate 400 guests, drawing visitors from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington each summer from June to September. Its register is reported to include James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Gen. George B. McClellan and Gen. U.S. Grant. The property passed to Daniel S. Von Neida in 1882 and stayed in his family until 1935. It is significant as a representative Victorian resort complex and as a record of how spa hotels expanded in the nineteenth century.","period_of_significance":"1848-1935","architect_builder":"Builder: Joseph Konigmacher","architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still owned by a corporation and operated as a hotel; the document also notes a later hospital use in part of the complex.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:33.199139-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/82003791.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003791/8a17431047-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003791/8a17431047-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Andrew Bossi","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mountain_Springs_Hotel_12.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Bossi</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mountain_Springs_Hotel_12.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995481","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Springs_Hotel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6925227"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/mountain-springs-hotel-82003791/"}
