It was built in 1927-28 for the Fraternal Order of Eagles and designed by architect Albert Thayer.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the only structure ever built by Canton Aerie 141, the oldest Eagles aerie in Ohio. It is also one of two remaining commercial buildings in Canton's central business district built just before the Depression. Standing in an area cleared by urban renewal, it represents a period when the city's future looked promising and civic groups built for it.","narrative":"Rising five stories at the corner of South Market Street in downtown Canton, this lodge hall was built in 1927-28 for Canton Aerie 141 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Architect Albert Thayer and contractor George Whike produced a polychromatic building of red brick, stone veneer and terra cotta, topped by a bell tower with a hipped red tile roof that gives it a Spanish Colonial Revival flavor. The south facade has a three-story arcade with cartouches reading F, O and E, and its windows once lit a ballroom known as the gold room. The aerie, organized in 1901 and the oldest in Ohio, had about 3,000 members at the dedication and built nothing else. The hall is also one of two surviving commercial buildings in the central business district from just before the Depression. It stands near the cleared Newmarket site and recalls the city's optimistic middle period.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Albert Thayer (architect); George Whike (contractor)","architectural_style":"Of uncertain architectural tradition; Spanish Colonial Revival flavor with Neo-Classical or Georgian Revival themes","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in fair condition and altered, with work in progress; original ground-floor and upper-story windows are infilled, and plans call for restoring original facade elements.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.051974-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82003646.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003646/8538bd071e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82003646/8538bd071e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eagles%27_Temple,_601_S._Market_St.,_Canton,_OH_7-23-2010_12-02-12_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eagles%27_Temple,_601_S._Market_St.,_Canton,_OH_7-23-2010_12-02-12_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991470","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagles_Temple_(Canton,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5325374"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/eagles-temple-82003646/"}
